Hi All, More and more rain in August, accompanied by power cuts, one was for 48 hours another 22 hours but we got through them! Our youngest child; Mingma, was 3 years old on 10th August, we held a birthday party on the 11th which is my son Craig’s birthday so we celebrated that too.
Dheere; aged 7, went to live at another children’s home nearby to be with his older brother, he’s very happy and settled there now. Prabakhar also left to go home to his parents as his father returned to care for the family, and our eldest boy; Mithun, went back to live with his mother in Humla. So we are down to 14 children which is a much more manageable number for one house. Our boys love football and if you ask them; ‘Who’s the greatest football team in the world’, they’ll tell you Manchester United, Oh yes, I’ve taught them well ! Bishal wrote to Wayne Rooney asking him if he’d be patron of our charity but he’s not answered; so if you know him, give him a nudge.
In September our project manager and I took Mingma to Solokhumbu in the Everest region to get his birth certificate etc from the local government office. We flew there in a small plane, landing on a dirt track of a runway in the freezing rain and stayed 3 nights, shivering, in a typical trekkers lodge in Phaplu. I had to hire a porter to carry Mingma down the mountain to the CDO office in Saleri and his uncle met us there and carried him back, the trek down was OK but I could have done with a porter carrying me on the steep climb back, it’s not easy climbing in the pouring rain!
Our housemother; Ganga, left at the end of September, her husband went to work in Dubai and she had to go home to care for her invalid father in-law. We seem to be jinxed; one housemother that started on a trial period after Ganga left, had a seizure on the 3rd night, I had to put her to bed and she left the next morning saying she thought the stress of the job had made her ill. (The kids aren’t that bad honestly!) We now have a very nice young woman called Maya as housemother, her sister is also starting work for us as deputy housemother at the end of November as Bhim will be leaving us to return to his art studies. Nepal’s most important festival; Dashain, took place in October, the children were off school for 10 days and enjoyed themselves flying kites at the park, a traditional pastime during Dashain. Ama Ghar; another local children’s home, invited us all to their house on the main festival day when Tika is given by the eldest in the family. The kids had a great time at Ama Ghar playing on the huge bamboo swing they had made especially for the festival. We also went to our project manager’s house at SOS Children’s Village for a party which the children enjoyed very much.
Steve Tate; a former volunteer at the TC, visited us in October, he and 5 friends rode Royal Enfield motorbikes from Kathmandu to Lhasa in Tibet and Everest Base Camp, it was a very arduous trip so huge congratulations to them.
Great news; we are moving house at the end of November, the new place is only 3 minutes walk away on the same side of the road as we’re on now. It’s a much better house and will be far warmer in winter, the toilets/showers are outside but you can’t have everything ! It’s going to be a logistical nightmare moving all our stuff, we will use the pick-up truck that delivers our rice and just hope we can get a few strong men to help lift and carry. I am going to be in the UK from the 21st December for 2 months on a much needed fundraising drive. If there are any clubs/interested parties that would like to meet me to hear more about our work in Nepal, please contact me via our website for ‘bookings’ after New Year. Happy Christmas from all at the TC and may the New Year be a healthy and prosperous one for everyone.
