"Namaste" - my heartfelt thanks go out to all of you who have helped me achieve my ambition to establish a children's home in Kathmandu for the desperate and abandoned street children in Nepal. I arrived back in Kathmandu on 8th January after spending Christmas with my family in Bournemouth. I hadn't expected to return to the UK so soon but urgent charity business and the knowledge that, due to the lengthy process involved in registering the project as an INGO (international non-governmental organisation), we would not be able to open our home until the New Year. The Social Welfare Council of Nepal has finally accepted our proposal and I attend the "Signing Ceremony" on the 16th January. Only in Nepal could they hold a ceremony to sign a piece of paper!!! However, I'll take part in as many ceremonies as necessary if it means we can at last start to help the children here. All being well we expect to admit our first children, seven boys aged between 6 and 11 on the 14th February. These children were referred to me through the Child Workers Concern Centre (CWIN). While I was away our project co-ordinator Akshya Dulal stayed at the house in Godawari to oversee the building of a kitchen/dining hall extension. This addition will free up space to accommodate more children in the future. Solar panels and water tanks have been installed, fencing erected, furniture purchased and rooms given a fresh coat of paint. There are still a lot of items needed including a phone line, internet and office furniture. We also require bedding, floor covering, kitchenware and a fridge/freezer. Donations are desperately needed to purchase these. So many people have helped in so many ways, gift-aided donations, regular standing order payments, donations of raffle prizes. Not to mention those of you who buy our raffle tickets, purchase goods from our stalls at the winter and summer fairs and attend our benefit dinners. My thanks also to our trustees, committee members and friends who work tirelessly to dream up ways of fundraising and ultimately bring these ideas to fruition. This year has been very productive with the various fundraising initiatives including: RINGWOOD WALDORF SCHOOL SUMMER AND CHRISTMAS FAIRS First, second and third raffle prizes went to: P Michelson, A Kinsley and B Rowland. Special thanks to the Dorset Fire Service who donated a fire blanket and smoke alarms for the Centre, Seaton Lions for their sponsorship and their intention to 'twin' with Kathmandu Lions, Jordan Bends Ltd Ireland for their generous cash donations, Andy Collis for his donation to our kitchen extension and Anil for organising and funding the benefit dinners. For this coming year we already have several interesting fundraising ideas: a sponsored slim, street collections and a Nepalese themed evening with music, food-tasting and various stalls. I believe Phaedra is planning another sponsored trek in September, brave girl! We are anticipating that our next newsletter will include photographs of some happy children.
