June 2006 Newsletter

On Thursday, 1st June, following requests from the Child Welfare Council (CWC) of Nepal, Sioux, Akshya and the top official of CWC, accompanied by the police went to 'rescue' 24 children from a home where they had been kept in one room.  Apart from a few vegetables they had not been fed for two months and all the little ones were suffering from serious malnutrition.  Many had serious infections, and two had to be taken to hospital for immediate urgent attention.

From a very poor part of the country, these children had been brought to Kathmandu under false pretences by members of an unregistered NGO.  Desperate for a chance of a 'better life' for the children, their families had paid 10,000 rupees (about £76) and travel expenses to the NGO for each child with the promise that they would be put into a private boarding school.

Sioux managed to accommodate the new arrivals by 'doubling up' our ten existing children, putting four beds together for the little kids, with the older boys sleeping under blankets on the big rug in the sitting room. Sioux writes "As you will imagine it has been something of a logistical nightmare, finding clothes for them all, showering etc.  Akshya has been his usual stalwart self and is coping with cooking daal baat for 34 children."

For the time being we are being helped with the extra finance by The Umbrella Foundation who are also sending and paying a married couple who are experienced house parents to help out.  We have no idea how long this support will be available or how long and how many of the children will remain at the Talbot Centre (it is hoped they may be able to return to their own families).  There is also the possibility that there may be further such emergencies.

It therefore becomes urgent that we consider and plan for expansion of our facilities sooner rather than later.  Please keep in contact with us to see how you can help.  We hope updated details will appear very soon.
