About Nepal

Nepal is among the world's poorest countries, with acute poverty and high infant mortality.  It is also among the least developed, with 40% of its population living below the poverty line.  Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy, providing a livlihood for over 80% of the population and accounting for 40% of GDP.  Industrial activity mainly involves the processing of agricultural produce including jute, sugarcane, tobacco and grain.

Sleeping children

41% of total population are children below 16 years.

27,000 children die of diarrhea every year.

There is only one national level children's hospital.

There is one child specialist to 1,04,066 children.

2.6 million children (5 to 14 years group) are engaged in different sectors of child labour.

Annually 12,000 women and children are trafficked to India.

At least 40,000 children are working as bonded labourers.

About 100 children are in adult jails.

More than 40,000 children have been displaced due to the; (now ended), armed conflict between government and Maoists.

34% of marriages involve children below 15 years.
