Roles for Volunteers & Skills Required


1. Trust and Lottery Fundraiser

Role Description

  • Researching grant making bodies that offer relevant funding
  • Writing appeal letters and completing grant applications
  • Maintaining records about applications submitted and their outcomes
  • Writing progress and final reports to funders on how their grant has been spent

Skills required

  • Good writing skills. Full training can be given in researching funders and compiling applications
  • Some marketing experience would be an advantage

2. Events Fundraiser

Role Description

  • Identify opportunities and organise events that will generate an income for the Talbot Foundation.
  • Research and follow up information
  • Create and maintain a diary of events

Skills required

  • Some experience of organising events desirable
  • Ability to motivate people

3. Community Fundraiser

Role Description

  • Running: door to door, street and supermarket collections, collection boxes in shops, raffles, teddy bear stalls and stalls at community fairs/fetes etc
  • Managing a team of volunteers

Skills required

  • Some experience of community fundraising desirable but full training can be given

4. Minor Donations and Child Sponsorship Fundraiser

Role Description

  • To identify potential faith groups and other community groups, the members of which might be willing to donate or sponsor and make appropriate presentations to them
  • To ensure that legacy giving is promoted in all areas of the Talbot Foundations communications/publicity materials and to deal with enquiries from potential donors.

Skills required

  • Presentation skills
  • Some experience desirable but full training can be given

5. Business and Employer Fundraiser

Role Description

  • Identify businesses and other workplaces that might be prepared to allow fundraising events with their employees and organise events such as ‘dress down days’ or joint child sponsorship projects
  • Carry out research about employers that have existing payroll giving schemes and undertake promotional work to sign up employees.

Skills Required

  • Previous experience desirable but full training can be given
  • Good contacts with local businesses and other employers

6. Major Donor Fundraiser

Role Description

  • Carry out research into potential major donors (stars, footballers, Company directors etc) that may have an interest in our charity and into the best ways of approaching them

Skills Required

  • Previous experience desirable but full training can be given
  • Ability to relate to people at a high level

7. Media Archivist

Role Description

  • To collate all information relating to The Talbot Foundation, to include media/press items, photos, videos, mail shots/fliers and any other material as deemed necessary. 
  • To retrieve and supply appropriate materials for others compiling newsletters and media releases

Skills required

  • Preparation and running of electronic data base
  • Filing and organisational skills

8. ‘Friends’ Co-ordinator

Role Description

  • To ensure continued commitment and interest from a varied list of interested parties.
  • To contact ‘Friends’ when needed to assist with fundraising events.
  • Editing a regular newsletter with information provided from Nepal about the children and our centre and with articles from volunteers visiting Nepal and on future events being organised in the UK
  • Print and distribute the newsletter

  • Organisational skills
  • Preparation of data base
  • Writing/editing skills

9. Volunteer Co-ordinator

Role Description

  • Liaise with prospective volunteers and ensure their suitability for either roles in Nepal or in the UK
  • Liaise with The Talbot Foundation in Nepal via email on potential volunteer visits
  • Undertake CRB checks
  • Ensure payment for living costs prior to commencement of placements in Nepal
  • Provide on-going support for volunteers
  • Liaise with volunteer referral agencies
  • Promote volunteering opportunities

Skills required

  • Data base of all volunteers and dates available to volunteer
  • Impart information required – re: expectations etc

10. PR Co-ordinator

Role Description

  • To publicise the Talbot Foundation and forthcoming events
  • To liaise with local and possibly national media
  • Compiling and submitting press releases

Skills required

  • Good writing
  • Good communication
  • Public speaking   


In Nepal:

Skills/Professions required

Teaching:
English, Maths, Art, Sport/Games, Music.

Health care:
Doctors, Nurses, Social workers, Child Psychologists, Alternative therapists.

Building maintenance etc:
Builders, Plumbers, Electricians, General DIY, Organic Veg’ Gardening.

General:
Ability to work on own initiative. Firm but caring attitude toward children. Experience not necessary but enthusiasm a must.

Length of stay:
A minimum stay of 2 weeks is required with a maximum of 5 months; preferably volunteers would be able to stay for at least a month in order to benefit both themselves and the children from the experience.

Hours of work during school term:
7.30 am to 10am &  3.30 pm to 7pm 
All day Saturday.

Days off for sightseeing/shopping by mutual arrangement.

Duties:
General duties would include: teaching basic English/Maths/Art, assisting with homework, supervising mealtimes and bedtime, helping children prepare for school, take and collect from school a short walk away, play games/sports, accompanying children and staff on picnics/days out.

Costs for food and accommodation:
£25 per week to include: own room, hot showers, transport from airport on arrival, emailing facility and access to professional trek/tour guides at special rates.

Meals consist of daal bhaat (rice with lentils and curried veg) served at 8.30am and 5.30pm with fruit/eggs/bread for lunch.  There are local shops nearby should you wish to purchase and cook other food.

Information:
Volunteers are advised to take out adequate insurance to cover their stay and to have all necessary immunisations. A visa for 2 months can be obtained at Kathmandu airport on arrival; forms are available there and require a passport photo; which can be taken at the airport, and a fee of approx £40. Visas can be extended on a monthly basis; for up to a 5 month stay in any one year period, at a cost of £40 per month.


In compliance with the Charities Commission all volunteers are required to submit to CRB clearance at a cost of £13.  An enhanced CRB clearance would be required if you are going to visit The Talbot Foundation, Nepal.

The Talbot Foundation (Helping Children in Nepal) is a Registered Charity, number 1105514 and is Registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The charity is named in memory of Stephen John Talbot (1953 - 2001), the late brother of our director.
